ABOUT STEWART CAMERON

Stewart Cameron was born in Auckland, New Zealand where he gained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Auckland University, majoring in Italian Literature and Language . Two years after graduating, at the age of 22, he won his country's biggest opera competition, the N.Z. Herald Aria, performing two Verdi baritone arias. Prior to this he performed with the National Opera of NZ firstly in the chorus, then in small roles and major role understudies. He then moved to Sydney to take up a place at The Opera School at the N.S.W. Conservatorium of Music, where he studied under the direction of Myer Fredman with Donald Munro as his voice teacher.

This period enabled him to work for three years in an environment more like that of a small professional opera company than a tertiary study institution, and enabled him to study more than a dozen major baritone roles and to take leads in operas such as "La Clemenza di Tito" and "Pelleas and Melisande".

After graduating , Stewart moved to London to study voice with David Harper and later studied repertoire with ( now internationally-renowned ) conductor Simone Young in Cologne. During this time Stewart performed regularly on the opera and concert stage, including taking the title role in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro for the Cornwall Festival.

Since making Brisbane his home, Stewart has performed with Wellington City Opera (NZ) as Papageno in The Magic Flute, as well as performing as a soloist with Q.S.O., Q.P.O., OPERATIF!, Qld Pops and Lyric Opera of Qld ( now Opera Queensland ). Stewart performed the role of John Sorrel to critical acclaim in Brisbane City Opera's highly successful production of The Consul for the Brisbane Festival .The following year he took the part of the consul, Sharpless, in OPERATIF's production of Madama Butterfly, a role he reprised when the production was given a return ( and sold-out ) season in Brisbane's Suncorp Theatre.

For the last few years, Stewart has concentrated his energies on performing with OPERATIF! , Queensland's proudly independent company of singers, enjoying the wonderful opportunities to regularly perform a diverse range of repertoire, from Broadway musicals to Lieder, French art song, 20th Century opera ,and everything in-between. He is featured on four CDs which are available for sale online and selected outlets.

Stewart was one of the driving forces behind the initial planning of OPERATIF! back in 1994, and was artistic and business manager of the first 4MBS Festival of Classics. In the four months of the contract, Stewart developed the Festival to a level not previously seen. He secured a Naming Rights Sponsor, increased Cash sponsorship by 1600 % , and forged strong relationships with Media organisations such as the Courier-Mail and Channel 7, which resulted in a 50% increase in ticket sales.

Two years ago Stewart was one of the two featured vocal soloists in the Qld Pops Orchestra's acclaimed performances of "The Best of British" in the Concert Hall, QPAC. , under the baton of Barrie Gott.

Stewart now also combines his busy performance schedule with a private singing and voice production teaching studio which enables him to pass on more than 20 years of professional experience. He has started to also be known for his Workshops in Voice Production for Public Speakers and Team Leaders.
